The incomparable AFFIRMED, the last Triple Crown winner and the only stallion in history to capture 14 G1 races, will be memorialized at Darley at Jonabell with a sculpture by renowned Equine artist Gwen Reardon. Lou and Patrice Wolfson's Harbor View Farm commissioned the half-life sized bronze. The completion of the statue, seen in the corresponding picture, coincides with the 25th anniversary of AFFIRMED's historic Triple Crown sweep. The two-time Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame member died in January, 2001, at what was then Jonabell Farm. The farm has since been purchased by Darley, and the new owners are in the process of redesigning the facility. In recognition of the great significance of AFFIRMEDs accomplishments, both on the racetrack and at stud, a focal point of the new stallion complex will be AFFIRMED's statue and gravesite. Until the complex is completed, the sculpture will remain in storage. Bred and raced by the Wolfson's Harbor View Farm, AFFIRMED triumphed over Alydar in the 1978 Triple Crown in what are perhaps the most memorable battles in the history of the sport. A champion at two, three, and four -- every year he raced, AFFIRMED remains the final horse to capture the elusive trio of races. You can see a detailed picture of the plaque by clicking here.
